Learning Snapshots

Firstly can I say a huge thank you to the whole school community: parents, staff and students for their contributions and work in making our Country Fair yet again a huge success. The day was full of community spirit and teamwork. I would like to acknowledge the local community and businesses for their support through sponsorship and donations. Our school is a special and unique place to work and learn because of the extra efforts our families and staff go to. Our trademark values of Respect, Excellence, Care and Teamwork were visible and evident on the weekend and I would like to thank everyone for their efforts. The money raised from this year’s Fair will go towards a new play area in place of the Billy McNeil memorial playground. Funds will also be used to purchase extra resources for students to enhance our learning programs in the classroom. Each year we heavily subside, camps and excursions through the money raised at our Country Fair and the wonderful work of our PFA (pancakes). Put simply all this work is for the students of our school to have the best possible education here at Woolsthorpe Primary School. Finally can I thank and acknowledge the work of all our area co-ordinators and give Suzi a special mention as overall Fair co-ordinator this year. Suzi spent many extra hours outside her normal work (with a helping hand from Tracey Taylor) preparing and planning for this year’s Fair. The work of Suzi and her whole team was amazing and shows what special relationships our parents and community have with our school.

Our Pizza Oven project is coming along nicely thanks to the work of Sam O’Keefe, Julie, Heather and Di from the community garden during the holidays. Check out the progress posts on our Woolsthorpe Kitchen Garden Facebook page. The Pizza Oven is a feature for our school and will be used for many years in the Kitchen Garden program and other events.

Our 2/3 and 4/5/6 Camps this year, were again a lot of fun with the students learning so many new skills. It was great to hear about the student’s experiences and also get some feedback about how wonderful the students were when they were out and about in the community. It’s nice to see our trademark values of, Respect, Excellence, Care and Teamwork really happening through the student’s actions. I would like to thank all staff for giving up their time (voluntary) away from their own families to run such a great camp experience for our students. Teachers spend many extra hours planning to ensure students are cared for and have a great experience at camp.

Monday November 11th our students conducted a Remembrance Day Service here at school which was a time to reflect and remember. The students did a fantastic job as always and showed great leadership. Sam Robinson and Tyra Toki represented our school and attended the Warrnambool Remembrance Day Service. Well done everyone!

Our swimming program at the Splash Factory is running smoothly. Swimming forms an important part of our overall PE/Sport program. It is great to see students for the first time in some cases enter the water and develop a lot of confidence in their abilities to swim and be safe in the water. The smiles on all the students’ faces tell the story! While students are a little tired the learning’s from the swimming program will be important life skills they can use forever. Thanks to all staff for their organisation over the 2 weeks with this program.

Benefits of Swimming- with less than 30% of children attending outside of school learn to swim programs; school swimming is an important program to provide all primary age children with water safety skills. Our nation is surrounded by water and swimming is one of our great passions. As well as being fun, swimming is a great way to keep fit, stay healthy and make friends. Swimming is a healthy activity that you can continue for a lifetime. It is a low-impact activity that has many physical and mental health benefits.
